Service Description:
|
National office, as per the Criminal Records Act, may issue, grant, deny, or revoke record suspensions (formerly known as pardons) for convictions under federal acts or regulations of Canada. Also makes recommendations for the exercise of clemency through the Royal Prerogative of Mercy.
Record suspension * allows people who were convicted of a criminal offence, but have completed their sentence and demonstrated they are law-abiding citizens for a prescribed number of years, to have their criminal record kept separate and apart from other criminal records * may order, refuse to order, or revoke record suspensions for convictions
Clemency * granted in exceptional circumstances in deserving cases involving federal offences, where no other remedy exists in law to reduce severe negative effects of criminal sanctions * can be requested for numerous reasons, including employment, perceived inequity, medical conditions, immigration to Canada, compassion and financial hardship
